My name is...

Tabitha has starting to call me Sarah.

I am sure it is a phase and is mainly due to her resently being around the staff at work who all (obviously) call me by my name.

I am trying to combat it by not answering when she calls me by it, and responding with 'I am Mummy' then addressing her request.

However I have to say its horrible to hear her say it over Mummy and she has also started shortening that to Mum which is not sitting well with me either. Don't get me wrong I am not a fan of children calling their mothers 'Mummy' beyond a certain age, and as an adult its just too sickly sweet but Tabitha is 2 years old.

It has reminded me that I used to have a friend whose children called her by her first name at her request, it never really occured to me to think it odd, but it is don't you think?

  1. I didn't want Charles to know my name just yet but he heard my mum call me Lauren when we were shopping. He called me Lauren then gave an awkward laugh, as if he felt uncomfortable knowing my name.
That's been the end of it really.
I also have a thing about him calling me mum, and other people calling me "Charles' and Harrys mum" or says "give that to your mum" I hate it. I'm a mummy, mother is acceptable but not mum.

  2. She;s just trying out language - and is far too young to know you might not like it and respond to that.  Best to let her try out everything she wants and as she grows she'll learn what you like and don't like. Just cos she's doing it now doesn't mean it'll stick...:)

  3. I agree with you, I wouldn't want my children calling me by my name. My brother tries to get them to use my nickname but I tell them that I don't like that & they stop.
Your little one could be looking for a reaction so I'd say to ignore it for now.

  4. I'm with you- Mummy all the way for me although at nearly 6 Lois is more Mum than Mummy now which is a bit sad. My cousins little boy went through a phase of calling her Bob. And because he saw it upset her he kept doing it!

  5. Growing up my neighbours called their parents by their first names and I found it REALLY strange. I'd hate it if my children started using my first name, but I do have family members who let their children call them by their first name. It's all a matter of opinion I guess, but personally I wouldn't like it. Hard with T being so little. but I'm sure like you say it's a phase x

  6. It is weird, I never thought I'd be fussed but now she says Mum I am.

  7. I hope not, she is learning so many new words at the moment though you are right I think its simply because she CAN say it.

  10. Yep, I know some people find Mummy lacks personal identity but fact is I am her Mummy so I like it. Especially after years of trying to have this child she WILL call me Mummy *stomps foot*

  11. Mine all went through this at some stage. My first did it the longest as he obviously wasn't hearing anyone else call us mummy or daddy. I know people who call each other mummy and daddy just so their child uses it, not going down that road!
