    Are you a runner by chance?  Apparently, toenails coming off of runners is common.  Happened to me, and before the podiatrist pulled my nail off, he stuck a needle about thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis long into my toe.  Not a fun time!
